Adia Millett
Blind Premonition

AUGUST–OCTOBER 2007

Mixed Greens is thrilled to begin the season with Adia Millett’s theatrically installed sculptures and
corresponding photographs. Interweaving design techniques from both ancient farmlands and modern
suburbia, Millett’s latest earth-covered miniatures illuminate the complexity and familiarity of what
one might call a “space in-between.”

Inside every structure, commonplace domestic objects are combined with natural earth-like signifiers
to create a psychological space. Dramatic lighting and unexpected elements, such as a sack of
potatoes or a floating pillow, lure viewers into a world of magical realism where Millett explores
moments between consciousness and unconsciousness, sobriety and intoxication, wakefulness
and sleep, living and death. Poetic moments of solitude and individuality are found in the context
of repetition.

By working with our fears, our homes, our desires and our politics, Millett challenges the weight of
our assumptions. Through the distortion of these ancient domestic spaces, she invites viewers to enter
into traces of a dream–otherworldly places where reason is subverted by fantasy.
